Thoughts on Veteran's Day, Words of Peace and Hope!

November 11, is coming up...known as Armistice Day, later known as Remembrance Day in the Commonwealth and Veterans Day in the United States, it marks the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France,  for the cessation of hostilities.   I thought about the current wars. WWI was tagged..."The War to end all Wars".

I went online to find out what  has been said in the past...   Pope Francis...who signs everything just Francis…in his  New Years message a few years ago for the 48th anniversary of the Day of World Peace...he spoke in front of a screen that had the Maria Dolens bell ringing in the background.  The Maria Dolens? And so I was off on a history quest.

The Maria Dolens is the name of a bell that was cast from the bronze of many of the cannons - 19, one from each of the countries that participated in WWI.  It sits in Roverto, in today’s northern Italy and it rings 100 times each day in the evening to honor the fallen and to many to act  as a symbol for peace and an end to war.

The Bell was the idea of Don Antonio Rossaro,  called the Bell of the Fallen.  It was given the name Maria Dolens and placed on the Malipiero tower of Castello di Rovereto.  It has been recast many times because of fractures from ringing 100 times a day no doubt... but it has always been recast and returned to the tower where is nightly reminds the world of the price of war.  The latest recast was blessed by Pope Paul VI and on November 4th, 1965 was placed on the Colle di Miravalle where it today rest above the city of Roverto.

On the bell, which is the second largest swinging bell in the world, were added at its recasting the statements of the Pontiff Pius XII "With peace nothing is lost. Everything is to be lost through war." John XXIII: "In pace hominum ordinata concordia et tranquilla libertas."

Today, as always, it rang 100 times at midday...in Italy as I am writing this..... just as it  was shown on the large screen in St. Peter’s square that day.

It is said that it tolls in the hope that Man, in the memory of the Fallen of every war and every nation in the world, may find the path that leads to Peace….

I say AMEN to that…! Sit and listen and think quietly...It is big it takes a bit or so to start ringing!

May and Memorial Day Monday Means Pies and History!

Old Town of Eaton Museum
Dreary as it has been the past few days, at least it is not SNOWING!  It is May 1 however, and so it is time to get out the information on Eaton Day! Once again our historical group will be hosting Eaton Day in the Hamlet of Eaton and as always ...invite everyone to come and join us in our history celebration.

This year’s event is scheduled as always for May 29th, Memorial Day Monday, from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. It will be the 22nd time the event has been held to honor Eaton’s rich history.  The event also brings the Town of Eaton together... in actuality it is like an “Old Hometown Day”!

As always the event will feature the Huge Museum Pie Sale, raffles, rummage sale, and the usual Hot Dogs and Soda with a whole lot of history thrown in.

The Old Town of Eaton Museum itself will be open from 1 pm until 3 pm, with its rich history on full display, much of it dating from 1797 forward!  Yes, Eaton is that old... and hence why the museum is called the “Old Town of Eaton Museum”.  Just a short hop down the road from the museum is the marker for the first clearing in Madison County dating to 1788.

The group that is putting the event on “Friends of the Old Town of Eaton Museum,” is excited because it has recently become a federally recognized charity, something the group has been working for a long time.

If any of the local societies or clubs would like to set up at the event… please email backstreetmary@yahoo.com.  If anyone would like to volunteer to bake or help sell please email backstreetmary@yahoo.com as well.

So come out and celebrate a history that started with Revolutionary Soldiers who came to the wilderness call New York to find homes....and to found communities for their children and the future!

Pie Sale, Thanksgiving, the Museum and my Thank You's

This has been a busy week, as the museum group is getting ready for our upcoming Thanksgiving Pie & Bake Sale next Saturday the 19th.

I have been very little help so far because of my injuries but I am whipping into shape.  Here I would like to thank all those who sent cards or words of encouragement and also to Kate & Mary Mahoney, Don Wheeler, Doug and Diane Chilson, Michele Kelly, Barb Keough, Cathy Nagle, and my brother and sister in law Fritz & Nola for their visits to the hospital. Broken ribs, broken collarbone, fingers, etc. are on the mend. (Still not typing too well!)

The Pie Sale has grown in size and we are lucky enough this year to use Jim Monahan’s little shop next to the Post Office again. Thanks Jim…. great location… with parking and space.

The pies and bake goods will also have items from our museum gift area and as always all proceeds go to upkeep of the museum which this year hosted a number of events, days open and did writing of history and history lectures..

The Friends of the Museum group is growing and we hope to have our 501 3c by next year. So think about joining with membership forms available at the event.

The sale will run from 10am until 3 pm so stop by and say hi and grab a bake good that you can use for Thanksgiving Dinner or as a gift….We will be looking for you!
